My Service Experience

One month ago, my school held a Saint Mary Way activity. Saint Mary Way is a service activity organized by Santa Maria Junior High School in Bandung. I participated in this activity with my friends in a large group. Before we carried out the service, we first decided on the location and activities to be done. In the end, we agreed to visit the Nazareth nursing home. Then we began planning what we would do there.

A week later on Saturday, we visited the Nazaret nursing home in Cikutra, West Java, Indonesia. We arrived at around 8:00 a.m. When we first arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the elderly women there. Then we were directed to the hall to prepare for the activities. After that, we started the activities with prayer and singing hymns. Then we sat next to the elderly women and chatted. I sat next to an elderly woman named Agnes, who was about 90 years old, and talked to her about her childhood. While we were chatting, one of the elderly women wanted to sing. She looked happy and was good at singing Mandarin songs, which made the atmosphere even warmer. After that, it was time for a light meal. I was in charge of preparing food for the grandmothers, and I also fed Grandma Agnes. The food served was bread and fruit.

I saw the grandmothers eating heartily and laughing. After that, we continued playing games with the grandmothers. We played a card game from the past, where the grandmothers took one card and read questions about their past experiences. After playing, we continued chatting with the grandmothers. I remember Grandma Agnes advising me that I must believe in God because those who believe will be saved.

After that, we said goodbye to the grandmothers there while singing together, and then we all said goodbye with happy hearts.

After playing, singing, chatting and eating with grandma, I felt happy and closer to God, because through them I learned to serve others and love one another.
